Doyle: Spotlight
So! I, uh, ended up buying that "Angel Spotlight: Doyle" one-shot comic, because I like Doyle. And I like comics. This is generally worth the $3.99 price for two great tastes that go great together (although seriously I was expecting it to be a buck less, jeez your cover is not that nice IDW). And then, because I love you guys but mostly my LAer friends, I decided to be stupid and scan the whole 22 page thing in case you can't find it because you're heathens and don't go to comic stores a lot. But Doyle is worth me doing something incredibly time-consuming and geeky right? Right.
This is a one-shot set before "City Of" in Angel: the Series. In this story, Doyle gives a brief overview of how his life changed from what it used to be to what it is now. The plot revolves around one of his drinking friends appearing in a vision of his and Doyle's failed attempt to save her. The art is good, stylistic but manages to make the characters resemble their live action counterparts. However, it's very bare bones and there's nothing apart from what artist focused on to give us that attention. The characterization is off too, since pre-series Doyle is showing traits that he gained during his stay at Angel Investigations, like his willingness to show his demon side in a fight and his sense of heroism, despite the narration saying otherwise. So overall, while not as good as the comics published by Dark Horse and Christopher Golden, this is still a decent story worth looking at as part of Doyle's legacy.
The Russel Walk's cover:

There are five covers to this story. Sadly the Steph Stamb and David Messina covers were sold out, and they were much better.
All of us in the gutter
"Hard to tell which half gets me in more trouble"
"Because you're drunk"
Confused with someone else
The vision
The eventual self-doubt
"But hey, five bucks is five bucks, right?"
Searching for her
"...Thought you were someone else"
Empty hotel because backgrounds are time-consuming
Irish action heroes
Too late
He pulls the body down
Chasing after the killer
Another vision prevents him from following
...and saves his life.
Doyle's expression in the last panel here is good
"I break it, I bought it?"
What the hell is she wearing to be carrying around a cleaver like that
Sheer dumb luck
And a convenient girder beam means Doyle wins
MeetingBatman Angel
